One of my friends posted on her blog about their family attending an air show. I was so jealous. I have always wanted to go to one, but it hasn’t ever worked out for me. While Brian was deployed to Iraq, there was an air show close by, but the thought of taking both kids alone wasn’t that appealing. However, last week Brian came home from work and told me that Eglin was having an air show. This was Eglin’s first open house since 2007, and was timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the installation. I jumped at the chance to finally see one this last weekend. It was awesome! The Thunderbirds (of course), Army Black Daggers, an F-22A Raptor demo were some of the highlights of the event. There was a continuous variety of aerial performances and static displays going on. They even re-enact the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 in the “Tora, Tora, Tora” show. As we wandered around the flight line and looked at the aircraft, and other military things, the air show was going on above us. There just wasn’t a bad seat! We grabbed lunch at a little booth, and ran into our friends there. Kennedy was thrilled to be able to hang out with Sadie for the afternoon. After a hot day in the sun, the show ended with the famous Air Force thunderbirds doing aerial tricks and amazing passes! We had the small point and shoot camera which was a little frustrating at times, but now I know next time I go I am bringing the real camera!
I definitely walked away feeling patriotic! Who couldn’t with their 5 year old sing bits and parts from the Air Force song!
Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;
Here they come zooming to meet our thunder,
At ’em boys, Give ‘er the gun!
Down we dive, spouting our flame from under,
Off with one h** of a roar! (Kennedy didn’t sing that part !! We substitute gigantic roar!)
We live in fame or go down in flame. Hey!
Nothing’ll stop the U.S. Air Force!
