Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival

Pirate flags are flying all over Fort Walton Beach, and it can only mean one thing: It’s time for the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival. We were pretty thrilled to share the crazy experience with Grandma and Grandpapa Hatt. It’s one of those things that you really need to be a part of to understand. People around here get all crazy about this. It’s pretty much the equivalent to Mardi Gras for our city! The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival is a BIG deal here, and lots of fun. It lasts for about a week or more. Treasure hunts, pirates everywhere, fireworks, and even a whole parade! We participated in several nights of the fun! Kennedy and Nathan both thought it was all a little crazy. Okay, a lot crazy. People were all dressed up as pirates.
Local residents prepare for weeks for the invasion of the infamous, yet ever popular, Captain Billy Bowlegs.

Captain Billy Bowlegs, along with his Queen, visit the local schools trying to persuade the kids to join his Motley Crew.

Captain Billy and his Crew invade Fort Walton Beach at the Annual Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival.

The Fort Walton Beach Mayor, and the brave Militia are not about to give up control of the city without a fight. The local Air Force Special Operations guys also get involved.

Nathan watched sister eat cotton candy and kettle corn intently all night. He wanted some so bad. When all of us were finally distracted, he thought it was the perfect time to make his move. He succeeded in getting the kettle corn and dumping it on our blanket. I was just a little too quick for him to get away with more than that!

Rifles and cannons blast away as the pirates come off their ship shooting their pistols! It’s CRAZY, but we all had a great time and came away with tons of loot!!

That looks like so much fun! In the picture on the blanket, Nathan even looked like he was being covert in his hunt for cotton candy and kettle corn…:)

What a crazy holiday! That is one of the great things about living in different cities, huh? We are so happy that G&G Hatt are there to share with you. It makes me get excited for our visit next month. Give lots of hugs for us!

I love that look on Nathan's face too. What a funny boy! Can I just say again, how jealous I am and wish I was there playing too!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I can't believe how big of an event they turn it into, but I think it's great. What a fun tradition!

How fun!! The boys would have LOVED that! If you guys are still there next year, we may have to make another trip out there just for Billy Bowlegs!

This looks so fun. Are you coming this summer? I hope we can see you. I changed our family blog to Ingletime.blogspot.com. I couldn't get the other one to work very well. Check out the new things there if you want. Tell Brian hello for us and that we are praying for him. Do they have a church service for him there?
